Cool interstellar medium as an evolutionary tracer in ALMA-observed local dusty early-type galaxies

چکیده

ABSTRACT The content and distribution of cool interstellar medium (<30 K) can indicate the evolutionary mechanisms that transform late-type to early-type galaxies (ETGs). To investigate this, ALMA observations 12CO[2-1] line emission were obtained for five dusty ETGs from a complete sample in low-density environments. Four have massive (∼109 M⊙), extended molecular gas reservoirs with effective radii ∼3–5 kpc. This work provides kinematic structural analysis these observations, explore possible mechanisms. Axisymmetric or bisymmetric models fitted discs, quantify dominant structures present highlight additional asymmetries. Integral field unit also examined where available. Two ETGs, GAMA64646 622305, appear undergone tidal disturbance leading discs and/or star-forming inner rings. GAMA272990 may merger, an elliptical galaxy embedded disc. GAMA622429 has probably minor indicated by asymmetry optical images. remaining ETG, GAMA177186, was affected source confusion offset which could be high-mass dust- gas-rich object at high redshift. Overall, it appears proportion environments massive, reservoirs, some kind interaction as part their recent evolution. Secular evolution then (re-)transform passive galaxies.

Metal Abundances in the Hot Interstellar Medium in Early-Type Galaxies Observed with ASCA

We have analyzed ASCA data of 27 early-type galaxies, and studied the properties of their X-ray emitting ISM (Inter Stellar Medium) in detail. We found that overlapping lines and free-bound continuum cause strong coupling in the derived abundances of various elements. The abundance determination is also difficult due to the uncertainties in the Fe-L atomic physics, because Fe-L lines couple wit...

HerMES: ALMA IMAGING OF HERSCHEL-SELECTED DUSTY STAR-FORMING GALAXIES

The Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) has identified large numbers of dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) over a wide range in redshift. A detailed understanding of these DSFGs is hampered by the limited spatial resolution of Herschel. We present 870 μm 0 45 resolution imaging obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) of a sample of 29 HerMES DSFGs ...

The Local Interstellar Medium

Substantial progress in the field of the Local Interstellar Medium has been largely due to recent launches of space missions, mostly in the UV and X–ray domains, but also to ground-based observations, mainly in high resolution spectroscopy. However, a clear gap seems to remain between the wealth of new data and the theoretical understanding. This paper gives an overview of some observational as...

The Local Interstellar Medium

The Local Interstellar Medium (LISM) is a unique environment that presents an opportunity to study general interstellar phenomena in great detail and in three dimensions. In particular, high resolution optical and ultraviolet spectroscopy have proven to be powerful tools for addressing fundamental questions concerning the physical conditions and three-dimensional (3D) morphology of this local m...

Herschel⋆-ATLAS/GAMA: Dusty early-type galaxies and passive spirals

We present the dust properties and star-formation histories of local submillimetreselected galaxies, classified by optical morphology. Most of the galaxies are late types and very few are early types. The early-type galaxies that are detected contain as much dust as typical spirals, and form a unique sample that has been blindly selected at submillimetre wavelengths. Additionally, we investigat...
